The Pope's Exorcist: 2023

the Pope's exorcist

The Pope's Exorcist is an American supernatural horror movie from 2023. It was written by Michael Petroni and Evan Spiliotopoulos, and it was based on Father Gabriele Amorth's books An Exorcist Tells His Story (1990) and An Exorcist: More Stories (1992). Russell Crowe plays Amorth in the movie. Daniel Zovatto, Alex Essoe, and Franco Nero also have parts in the movie.
When Screen Gems bought the rights to Amorth's true story in 2020, filming began that year.

After the director was changed and the story was changed, the movie was shot in Ireland from August to October 2022.

There have been a lot of movies about exorcisms. What makes this one different? It's based on a book by Gabriele Amorth, who was a real-life exorcist.
Amorth, along with five other priests, founded the International Association of Exorcists.

He was known all over the world for his work in demonology and exorcism. Father Amorth did thousands of exorcisms over the course of his career. He became one of the most well-known and controversial people in the Catholic Church in the modern age.
The film has very good special effects.
Another interesting detail is that in this film, the demon (Asmodeus) managed to carry out multiple possessions, he managed to possess the boy (Henry), the girl (Amy) and even the pope.
Interesting detail, the Pope is always considered a holy figure, His Holiness, so if it has been possessed it is because it is not pure or free of sins.

The only detail, which is common to all exorcism films, is that the demons are easily defeated at the end, by the priest, with Christian prayers in Latin. In reality this would not be possible.
Another detail that I didn't like was the film almost trying to clean up the church's image about the dark phase of the Inquisition, attributing the blame to the devil who possessed a bishop.
So, in that sense, they try to give an image of excusing the church for the era of the Inquisition.
But, in short, the film is entertaining.

It's curious, in this type of film the devil always tries to "enter" the church and contaminate it.

But in real life the Church is not a pure institution, it already has the devil inside, it has connections with mafia money and thousands of cases of pedophilia.

"The Offering" - 2023

the offering

Movie directed by Oliver Park and Les Weldon, released in January 2023.
It surprised me positively, the story evolves and has surprises.
The Offering involves a Hassidic community. A man (Yosille) since he lost his wife, decided to study occultism, goetia, the esoteric kabbalah and invoke an archangel in an attempt to recover his wife.
But the ritual went wrong and his own daughter died (Sarah).

The man then tries to be possessed by the female demon Abyzou and imprison her in his body, by sticking a consecrated dagger in his chest, and using an amulet.
He made it and died this way. Meanwhile, the body goes to a mortuary.
Arthur (Nick Blood) and his pregnant wife, go to Arthur's father's house, owner of that funeral home, and he helps to autopsy the body, it is then that the demon Abyzou will escape.
All through the movie there are scenes of suspense and the spirit of the girl (Sarah) is seen, and at other times the demon Abyzou.
The ending is unexpected and surprising, I can tell that it is not a happy ending.

Abyzou in folklore, is a female demon that abducts children and causes deaths during pregnancy. The name came from Akkadian Apsu or Sumerian Abzu.

Extraterrestrial- 2014

extraterrestrial

If you like dark psychological thrillers and UFO movies, you'll love "Extraterrestrial". Directed by Colin Minihan. April visits her parents' vacation cabin in the woods, with Kyle and her friends. During their stay, they come across a crashed alien spaceship and decide to investigate. Later, they find themselves terrorised and chased by aliens.

The film has impressive scenes, obviously it has a lot of sci-fi, for example when April calls the attention of the UFO to be abducted and go to save her boyfriend (Kyle).

The scene inside the UFO is totally SCI FI, the craft looks dark, gloomy, dirty inside.

However, the film has scenes that, frighteningly, are among the most reliable and realistic of the way in which the Government and the military deal with abductees, instead of helping them, they usually always eliminate witnesses.

Dark Skies -2013

Dark skies ufos

This is another great dark psychological horror film about alien abductions, written and directed by Scott Stewart.

It has good actors and a compelling story. It shows quite interesting details, such as how the aliens can manipulate the mind of people (with hallucinations or telepathically) and micro-manipulation of time.

They live a peaceful life in the suburbs with their sons, Jesse (Dakota Goyo) and Sam (Kadan Rockett) However, that peace soon shatters with a series of disturbing events that escalate. It becomes clear that their family is being targeted by an unimaginably terrifying, deadly alien threat. Daniel and Lacy draw upon their courage and determination to protect their family and identify what is after them.

The Phoenix Incident -2015

Phoenix incident

Another found-footage horror movie with extraterrestrials, another one based on the events of Phoenix lights. Directed by Keith Arem.

The fact-based sci-fi thriller blurs the line between fiction and reality and revolves around a military conspiracy and the controversial missing persons case surrounding the infamous Phoenix Lights In the beginning they use real UFO videos taken from YouTube. This movie has realistic and nice fight scene between jet fighters are UFOS, but in reality the triangular Ufos are similar to the TR3b made by the military.

Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County- 1989

alien abduction Lake County

The movie is a larger version with higher budget of the movie "The McPherson Tape", but same story, same director. Another great found-footage horror movie with aliens, this one very realistic. Directed by Dean Alioto. Grey aliens, abductions, haunting their house at night, etc.

A son goes out to investigate a mysterious blackout and captures footage of actual aliens. When the aliens follow him and his brothers back to their home, everything breaks loose.

As a kid, I watched this on television in my country (Portugal) and the television channel broadcasted it after the news, as if it were a real case. The effects are good, for example when we see two grey aliens mutilating a cow and their big space ship nearby.

When we see the aliens walk through the wall of the house as if they were dematerializing, their nose dripping blood (some kind of psychotronic influence on the part of UFOs), that stuff I guess they made a research about real UFO abductees and some details.

Phoenix Forgotten -2017

phoenix forgotten

Another great, found-footage movie about the Phoenix Incident, with an interesting story that doesn't let you down at the end. Based on the 1997 mass UFO sightings in Phoenix, Arizona and Sorona, Mexico. On Thursday, March 13th 1997 thousands of people reported seeing strange lights in the sky.

Between the documentary style of Sophie's investigation and the footage of Josh and his two friends (Ashley and Mark) investigating the sighting. The three teenagers disappear.

Aliens abducted them?

Phoenix Forgotten is a watch that captures the imagination with its mix of styles and nice effects.

The Phoenix Tapes ’97 -2016

phoenix tapes

This is a found-footage horror movie, an ufological horror movie. I love that.

Directed by Turner Clay; The Phoenix Tapes ’97 really goes all out to make this film seem like a real thing.  The Phoenix Tapes '97 is not the only film to rely on this famous UFO event. It's not the only story to rely on the Phoenix Lights incident. In 2015 we had "Phoenix Incident" and in 2017, we had "Phoenix Forgotten".

The movie begins with an interview with a man about the death of his son. This man is convinced that his son was murdered by the government, as he was trying to smuggle a set of video tapes away. During the Phoenix Lights incident, four men disappeared, and these tapes show their final days.

down a dark hall

Kit (AnnaSophia Robb), a difficult young girl, is sent to the mysterious Blackwood Boarding School when her heated temper becomes too much for her mother to handle. Once she arrives at Blackwood, Kit encounters eccentric headmistress Madame Duret (Uma Thurman) and meets the school’s only other students, four young women also headed down a troubled path. The Craft- 1996

The Craft 1996

"The Craft is a cult classic movie that contains paranormal, terror, and magick.

Because of this movie, thousands of teenagers started to be interested in witchcraft.

The Craft is a 1996 American teen supernatural horror film directed by Andrew Fleming, based on a screenplay by Peter Filardi and Fleming. The story is by Filardi. The film stars Robin Tunney, Fairuza Balk, Neve Campbell, and Rachel True. The story follows four teenage girls from a Los Angeles parochial high school who pursue witchcraft for their own gain and then experience negative repercussions.

There are scenes of the Gothic witch Nancy that are impressive, like when she walks on water and hundreds of killer whales (orcas) appear dead on the beach. Neve Campbell was also an actress in the movies 'Scream.'.

By the year 2020, they had made a second movie to celebrate twenty years. It was named "The Craft: Legacy," but with different actors.

The Craft: Legacy is a soft sequel to the 1996 movie, but it was made by a different director.

Blade Trilogy -2008/2004

Blade movie

Blade Trilogy

Another cult classic "Blade" was famous for its fighting scenses with Wesley Snipes. The special effects were also good.. The music track from the Vampire Nighclub was also famous, which is a Pump Panel remix of 'Confusion' (band: New Order)

Blade is a film and television series that is based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. Wesley Snipes plays Blade in the original trilogy and Sticky Fingaz in the television series.

"Blade Trinity stars Wesley Snipes, Ryan Reynolds, Jessica Biel, Parker Posey, among other stars.

The Possession -2012

the possession

There are many movies about possessions and exorcisms, and with "Possession" titles.

But this "The Possession" from 2012 directed by Ole Bornedal is quite good.

It stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Clyde), Kyra Sedgwick (Stephanie), Natasha Calis (Emily), Grant Show, Madison Davenport (Hannah), and Matisyahu.

Clyde (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), is divorced. Clyde and his two daughters (Emily and Hannah) spent the weekend getting to know the new house he bought. On the way back, there was a garage fair, a man was selling old things, and there was a cursed wooden box.

Emily asks father Clyde to buy an antique box, unaware that inside the box lives a malicious ancient spirit.  At night, in her room, Emily managed to open the box, take out some old objects, and put a ring on her finger. Day after day, she began to behave differently and become more aggressive. She attacked a classmate fiercely when she tried to take the box away from her.

The movie has some good scenes of possession and poltergeist activity.

Clyde travels to a Hasidic community where he meets Tzadok, a Jewish man willing to help him defeat the Dybbuk spirit and save Emily from becoming completely possessed by the demon.

the possession

Good actors, good acting, good special effects, and a great story.

The Fourth Kind -2009

the fourth kind

The Fourth Kind -2009

This is a ufological thriller starring Mila Jovovich as Dr. Abigail Tyler. Since the 1960s, the small town of Nome in Alaska has seen a disproportionate number of people reported missing every year. Despite multiple FBI investigations, the truth has never been found. When newlywidowed psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler (Jovovich) arrives in the town to interview people affected by the disappearances, she gradually uncovers evidence that points to the possibility of alien abduction. Even more concerning are the accusations of a federal cover-up.

The Fourth Kind is the best and smartest of the various alien and UFO movies I've watched.

Because they were able to combine paranormal activity (spirit possessions) with extraterrestrials and even mythology. A good researcher of Ufology, ancient archeology and sacred scriptures knows that there is a relationship between everything.

The aliens in this film levitate a man on the bed and there is possession.  The aliens voice speaks through him and in Sumerian language.

At a certain point a patient (Abbey) was possessed channeling the alien's voice which seems to be understood as "I am God", but later it is perceived in the translation "I am like a God", this reminds me of the connection with the Anunnaki extraterrestrial gods that the Sumerians contacted. It is a brilliant film in terms of content, story, consensus, and effects.

alien possession

The levitation scene in the movie is much better than those in "Paranormal Activity", "Poltergeist" or "The Exorcist". The film's story has little basis, since in Alaska there have always been hundreds of UFO sightings and abduction cases.

The Twilight Saga

twilight saga

The "Twilight" movies are five, but that's because the fourth movie was split into two parts.

The first movie of 'Twilight' premiered in 2008. The Twilight Saga is a series of movies based on the book series Twilight by Stephenie Meyer.  These vampire movies are a classic, very good, and worth watching a few times.

High-school student Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), always a bit of a misfit, doesn't expect life to change much when she moves from sunny Arizona to rainy Washington state. Then she meets Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), a mysterious teen whose eyes seem to peer directly into her soul. Edward is a vampire whose family does not drink blood, and Bella, far from being frightened, enters into a dangerous romance with her immortal soulmate.

Teenagers like the movie because of Bella and Edward's romance. But the film has more situations, including a fight between vampires and werewolves, rival clans, and Bella (Kristen Stewart) is beautiful.

Also, I enjoy watching Alice, a vampire-precognitive woman.

I especially enjoyed the fight scene in "Breaking Dawn, part II" against the Vulturi and Alice's psychic vision.

2008 - "Twilight"

2009- "The Twilight Saga: New Moon".

2010- "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse".

2011- "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn".

2012- "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, part II".

TV shows about the Occult

In this post, I will provide some suggestions for series (Netflix and other channels)

Each person will obviously have their own personal preferences, some will like certain series, and others will not, but the objective was to list the various series that address the occult and paranormal.

In reality, spells and rituals don't work as quickly or as well as they do on TV, but these shows are always interesting to watch.

Sometimes they teach important tips on mythology, contain quotes from books, or subliminal messages, and whoever is a keen observer will absorb these messages.

Charmed:

The series of three witch sisters was fun and full of mysticism, and aired on TV between 1998 and 2006. It had 8 seasons, and was produced by The WB Network (short for Warner Brothers). A remake was released in 2018, but it lacks the same fun and becomes monotonous.

Supernatural:

This series is a classic, it aired for several years and has 15 seasons.

Although the series has a lot of fantasy, the Winchester brothers are monster hunters and investigators of the paranormal. Some interesting points I found:

In one of the series the type logo was a hexagram used in thelema. That symbol appeared in immense books and at the beginning of the series, there is still the demon Crowley who ruled hell. Crowley was the demon who ruled hell. In the end of the 14th season we can see that "God" is a little perverse, for him, we are just another world created by him, a type of game for him to pass the time, I got the feeling that they want to convey that this god who created the our world is the false god of gnosis: Demiurge.

Once Upon a Time:

It premiered in October 2011, ending in May 2018, and had 7 seasons. The series is about several fairy tale characters who were brought into the real world and had their original memories stolen by a powerful curse.

The Originals:

Premiered in October 2013, with 5 seasons in all, this very good series tells the story of the original vampire family (the Mikaelson).

It was a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries that was made by The CW. Throughout the series, there are many occult and witchcraft that takes place in New Orleans, where there are witches and voodoo practitioners. The series contains some elements of fantasy, witches against vampires and werewolves, engaging stories and some philosophical quotes from books.

Legacies:

This series is a spin-off of "The Originals", as it tells the story of the teenage Hope Mikaelson, daughter of the vampire Klaus. Hope has supernatural powers and is a hybrid witch.

The series premiered on "The CW" in October 2018. Hope Mikalson is a teenager who has supernatural powers and goes to a school called "Salvatore School" where more students with psychic powers, vampires, werewolves, etc. appear. There are already 4 season’s.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina:

Famous Netflix series, follows the same wave of Legacies, but here this blonde teenager is a witch who, belonging to a family of witches and had to sign the book of shadows (blood pact) with the darkness lord, she will try to fight evil in the name of love and friendship.

The series has a lot of allusion to Satanism, black and blood magick quite often and necromancy too, the figurine of Baphomet appears frequently in their coven "Church of Night", so much so that "The Satanic Temple" in real life wanted to claim compensation Netlfix for image rights.

This series is inspired by the comic books, the series was produced by Warner Brothers in association with Berlanti Productions. Four seasons.

Salem:

It premiered in April 2014 on the WGN channel, it was one of my favorite series, it depicts the village of Salem where many witches were chased and burned in the 17th century. Series full of engaging mysticism, witchcraft, has had three seasons and unfortunately has not been renewed.

Mary Sibley, one of the main and powerful witch, in the last season had to face the son she had begotten (John), who was archangel Samael reincarnated. The series has interesting quotes and philosophies about Eden, the origin of humanity, God, the forces of good and evil.

Constantine:

Series based on the comic "Hellblazer" created by Alan Moore, maybe in the movie Constantine too. The series (as happened to many) had a season , but was later canceled for renewal, but this character Constantine appeared in several episodes of the series "DC legends of Tomorrow" season 4.

When he starts making invocations in Latin and tracing luminous magickal sigils in the air, he resembles "Dr Strange" from the Marvel movies.

Penny Dreadful:

This British HBO series has had 2 seasons, it is said that there will be another.

The name is inspired by old horror newspapers that were sold in England, in the 19th century, and cost 1 cent, hence the name "penny" (cent) and Dreadful (terrible, scary). The series shows famous fictional characters such as dr Frankenstein, Van Helsing, Dorian Gray, among others, also appear witches, werewolves.

Light as a Feather:

It is an American supernatural thriller web series, based on the book of the same name by Zoe Aarsen, which debuted on October 12, 2018, on Hulu. The series was created by R. Lee Fleming, Jr .. It reminds us a little of the movie "The craft", which also had teenage girls who got involved with the occult and witchcraft.

Five teenage girls as they deal with the supernatural consequences of an innocent game “Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board.” When they begin to die exactly as predicted, survivors must find out why they are being hit - and if the force of evil that hunts them is one of them. It has 2 seasons so far.

Midnight Texas:

American supernatural series broadcast by NBC, based on books by author Charlaine Harris. It started in July 2017.

It portrays the life of the inhabitants of a small town inhabited by vampires, witches, assassins, a fallen angel and other individuals with supernatural origins. Manfred Bernardo is a psychic and constantly sees the spirit of his deceased grandmother, who gives him information. He has the power to repel supernatural entities. It ended in December 2018 having only 2 seasons.

Diablero:

Aired in December 2018, the name Diablero is Mexican, or Latin for a wizard, exorcist, sorcerer.

It is a kind of Mexican "Constantine", Diablero Elvis Infante tries to avoid the apocalypse. The supernatural Mexican series was broadcast on Netflix, based on Francisco Haghenbeck's book "El Diablo me obligó" (the Devil forced Me). At the moment 2 seasons are known, it is not known if there will be another one.

Wynonna Earp:

It premiered in April 2016 on the Syfy channel. This series I find difficult to describe, it seems to me a mixture of "Supernatural" that had two demon hunters brothers, here are two sisters, and it has some similarities with the series " Van Helsing " that was a hunter of vampires and demons . But Wynonna is a kind of western, a badass gunfighter that has a "peacemaker" pistol that manages to send demons to Hell, the city where they live is Purgatory. The series is interesting, engaging, has had 4 seasons.

Emerald City:

Fantasy series broadcast by NBC based on the OZ book series (Wizard of Oz, Land of Oz).

It premiered in January 2017. I found the series interesting, the actress Adria Arjona (playing nurse Dorothy Gale) went to a parallel world in another dimension; Emerald City, where meets the wizard of Oz. In the series there is a witch of the North "Glinda" and the witchcraft scenes have very interesting special effects, I liked the story of the series, unfortunately there were no more seasons. There was only one season, they say the problem was the audiences, but there are rumors that there were differences between the production and Josh Friedman.

American Gods:

American series from the Starz channel, based on the novel by Neil Gaiman. It debuted in April 2017, had two nominations for Primetime Emmy Awards.

The series focuses on Shadow Moon, a man serving three years in prison. With a few days to go until his sentence ends, Shadow ends up being released unexpectedly after his beloved wife, Laura, is killed. Later, Shadow finds himself next to a man named Wednesday (who is actually the god Odin).

In this series, several mythological gods emerge, these ancient gods are losing power because humanity ceases to worship them and starts to worship technology as a kind of new divinity (internet, television, the media, technical boy and mr World). Ancient gods and entities appear as an Irish leprechaun (Mad Sweeney), Bilquis appears who is a Jinn from Arab mythology (Queen of Sheba), Czernobog who in Slavic mythology is a divinity of light and sun (Bielebog), among others.

Shadowhunters:

This series was very good, with an excellent soundtrack, good effects, and a great ending. Beautiful actresses.

It debuted in January 2016 and had 4 seasons, based on the literary series The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare, developed for television by Ed Decter. It portrays the life of the young Clary Fray completely changes when she discovers that she is part of a race of humans that hunt demons and have angel blood, the Shadow Hunters (there was also the film) have magical runes tattooed on their bodies, each rune awakens a power.

The series is filled with vampires, werewolves, witches, wizards and other characters.

The opening song is "This Is the Hunt" performed by Ruelle, and written by Maggie Eckford and Jeff Bowman especially for the series. In December 2015, Netflix acquired worldwide rights to show Shadowhunters, excluding the U.S., making the series available as an original series the day after its North American debut.

The Order:

The Order is an American television series of supernatural horror and drama created by Dennis Heaton and Shelley Eriksen that premiered on Netflix on March 7, 2019.

Student Jack Morton joins an initiatory order: Hermetic Order of the Blue Rose. As Jack delves into the organization's history, he discovers dark family secrets and an underground battle between werewolves and the arts of magical darkness. A second season has been announced. The series will not be renewed.

Being Human:

I didn't see the British series, only the American, so it is this version of the American remake that I will talk about. Broadcast on the Syfy channel.

A vampire, a ghost and a werewolf share the same apartment. The series uses a little comedy and drama to show the three characters trying to live in harmony in a "normal" way, in a world that disowns them.

I particularly liked the story of Sally Malik, the girl who was a spirit, who was trapped in the house without being able to get out, she was unable to manipulate matter (move objects) and had to learn to be noticed. Later he met a ghost Tony, who taught him some tricks, and teleport to other places.

Locke & Key:

This series has Netflix quality and good effects, premiered in February 2020, but is already involved in controversy and accused of copying another series (The Haunting of Hill House).

In its first episodes, it mixes horror and fantasy classics.

The series follows the journey of the Locke family, who moves to Key House, an old mansion located in Massachusetts, after the assassination of Patriarch Rendell. Facing the strangeness of arriving in a new place after losing a loved one, mother Nina and her children discover that their home is full of magical keys that confer supernatural powers on those who use them. However, these powers wake up an old evil that starts to haunt the new residents. Adaptation of the comic of Joe Hill and drawn by Gabriel Rodriguez.

Dracula:

2020 miniseries. Developed by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, based on the novel of the same name by Bram Stoker.

I found it quite interesting to have made a remake of Dracula, the story is interesting, good special effects, it is only worth having three episodes only, but they are long (about an hour and a half) which is equivalent to five or six episodes of another series (which have 40-minute episodes).

The series was broadcast and released on BBC One and Netflix. Now, as it is fashionable to have lesbians and gays in all series, this dracula was a bit bisexual, as he converted a attorney Jonathan Harker into a undead and called him a bride.

Luna Nera:

Another series aired on Netflix. The Italian series was filmed in Rome and reflects the times of witchcraft in the 17th century, premiered in January 2020.

The story is based on the book Luna Nera by Tiziana Triana. The Netflix production follows a 16-year-old midwife named Ade who is accused of witchcraft after the death of a newborn. Afraid, Ade flees to the forest and finds a refuge and shelter in a witch community.

The plot mixes elements of fantasy, science fiction and terror. The first season has six episodes. I leave a final tip, before watching a series do not rely on the negative reviews that some famous websites (or newspapers) write. Decide for yourself, watch the s series and formulate your own opinion. Many of them are worth watching.

Amityville: The Awakening. 2017

amityville awakening

There are many movies based on the Amityville incident, but I prefer the 2017 "Amityville: The Awakening" because it has a better story, better effects, and Bella Thorne is so sexy.

This great movie was written and directed by Franck Khalfoun.

When some footage from 1976 is found, the case of the haunted house in Amityville is reopened. Belle, the younger sister, and her comatose twin brother move into their mother's house in order to save money for the sick children treatment. But when strange things start to happen, like her brother's miraculous recovery, Belle starts to think that her mother isn't telling her the whole truth about where they live.

By the way, Mckenna Grace (Juliet) acted as a young version of Sabrina on "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina."
